Sargon of Akkad, around 2300 BCE, is often described as building one of the earliest large empires in Mesopotamia. Inscriptions credit him with many victories and with extending control over distant cities and trade routes. Later stories add dramatic details about his childhood and rise to power. Because the evidence includes royal propaganda and later legend, historians read the claims carefully while still recognizing Sargon’s role in early empire-building.
