Passage

Priyanka volunteered to translate at a community meeting and silently corrected speakers' rough phrasing into polished English. She thought she was helping. Then an older man interrupted to say, in his own careful English, that his words were supposed to sound tired because he was tired. The room waited. Priyanka repeated his original phrasing, pauses and all, and the complaint about bus service suddenly carried more weight than her smoother version had. Her task changed from improving voices to carrying them across intact.
