A college replaced a fixed cutoff placement test with an adaptive test that gathered more information near course boundaries. Overall pass rates in first-year mathematics changed little. However, among students whose placement differed between the two tests, those assigned by the adaptive test passed their recommended course at rates close to established students in that course, whereas students assigned by the old cutoff had unusually high withdrawal or repetition rates. Course content and grading were unchanged.
