A single university ranking gives applicants a simple comparison across institutions. Its simplicity is also its weakness: combining research output, selectivity, salaries, and class size into one score embeds value judgments about their relative importance. Universities may then redirect resources toward measured features even when those features do not match their missions or students' needs. Comparative information is valuable, but it should be presented as a transparent dashboard that lets users weigh dimensions relevant to their goals. An ordinal list cannot be neutral merely because its arithmetic is consistent.
