Astronomers detected a brief plume above an icy moon and first modeled it as material heated by a shallow pocket of liquid. Spectral analysis found salts inconsistent with that shallow source. A revised model placed the liquid deeper, but it could not explain the plume’s regular timing. The team ultimately proposed that tidal flexing periodically opened fractures connecting the deeper reservoir to the surface.
