Passage
According to the passage, the movement called the Kitchen Modernists has often been misread as either nostalgia for ornamental dining-room design that displayed household status or as total rebellion against it. The author instead places the movement in a setting in which electric appliances changed domestic labor without ending expectations of hospitality. Its designers retained careful proportion and coordinated surfaces yet centered work counters, storage routes, and visible utility. The movement therefore turned an inherited convention toward a problem the convention had previously been able to ignore: how to redefine domestic beauty around labor-saving organization.
