A comet sometimes brightens suddenly and releases a fan of dust. The subsurface-pressure model says trapped gas accumulates beneath a crust until it ruptures, so gas should accelerate before large dust fragments are expelled. The cliff-collapse model says a surface wall fails, exposing fresh ice that sublimates afterward; large fragments should move first, followed by increased gas. Rapid observations can establish the sequence.
