A communications platform exhibits a self-reinforcing network effect once enough users join that each additional user increases the service's value to existing users. Interoperability with rival platforms can lower the number of users needed to reach that point, but only if messages and contact lists transfer in both directions. Platform Z imports rival contact lists but does not allow messages to cross platforms.
