In a survey, respondents were asked when they had last experienced a major household expense. Many events reported as occurring within the previous six months were found in administrative records to have occurred earlier. Researchers called this telescoping: salient events are remembered as more recent than they were. Because especially expensive events were most likely to be shifted forward in memory, the survey exaggerated both the recent frequency and the average severity of expenses.
