Passage

Fossils in Layers When plants or animals die, they usually break down. Sometimes, though, they are covered quickly by mud or sand. Over time, the mud and sand harden into rock and can keep a trace of the living thing. That trace is called a fossil. In many places, older rock layers are found below newer layers. If a fossil is in a deep layer, it is usually older than a fossil in a higher layer.

If one fossil is found in a deep rock layer and another is found in a higher layer, which fossil is usually older?
