Passage

First, Zara and Grant waited in the pier at sunset. Clouds moved like slow ships. The air smelled like old paper and lemon cleaner. "Keep your voice low," Grant said, tapping a sign that read SILENCE. Zara nodded and whispered, "I can almost hear the pages breathing." Later, they crossed into the creek behind the playground. Snowflakes spun in the air. People called to one another and bags rustled like leaves. "Here we can talk," Zara said, raising their voice. Grant laughed, "Now the whole place sounds awake."
